The Catacombs

The Catacombs of Paris are not a museum like any other; they are the largest underground ossuary in the world, a place steeped in history that offers an unusual and fascinating experience deep within the capital's bowels. Located 20 meters underground, this labyrinth set up in former quarries houses the remains of several million Parisians.

A Bit of History

Opened to the public in 1809, the Catacombs were created at the end of the 18th century to cope with the saturation of Parisian cemeteries, particularly the Cemetery of the Innocents.

The bones were gradually transferred and arranged in an artistic and philosophical manner, with inscriptions and poems marking the route.

The Visit Route

The visit is a one-way route of approximately 1.5 km, with a constant temperature of 14 °C (57 °F).

  • The Entrance: Located at 1 avenue du Colonel Henri Rol-Tanguy (Place Denfert-Rochereau), access is via a spiral staircase of 131 steps down.
  • The Ossuary: You will walk through galleries where skulls and femurs are carefully aligned, separated by pillars and decorations. The lintel welcomes you with the famous phrase: "Arrête! C'est ici l'empire de la mort." (Stop! This is the empire of Death.)
  • The Exit: The route ends with 112 steps up, and you emerge at 21 bis avenue René Coty, about 700 meters from the entrance.
