Saint-Hermeland Church: A Historical Gem

The Saint-Hermeland Church (Église Saint-Hermeland), a place of worship and memory, was built between 1175 and 1240. It is a perfect example of early Gothic architecture, and one can clearly feel the influence of the innovative style of Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral, built during the same era.

Its construction was likely commissioned by the Canons of Paris, lords of Bagneux from the 9th century until the Revolution. Over the centuries, the building has undergone several modifications:

• The bell tower, destroyed in 1567 during the Wars of Religion, was rebuilt in 1722.

• The famous architect Viollet-le-Duc directed important restorations in the mid-19th century, particularly on the facade, the south aisle, and the tympanum.

• The tympanum, sculpted in a block of limestone, represents the theme of the Last Judgment. Although it was mutilated during the Revolution, you can still admire its details.

The church has been classified as a historical monument since 1862, as have several of its treasures: the 16th-century organ loft, a holy water font from 1635, the 18th–19th-century baptismal fonts, and an exceptional set of 12 funerary slabs dating from the 13th to the 17th century.
