Richelieu House

Discover the history of the Maison Richelieu, an emblematic place in the city.

Built between 1636 and 1641 by Bénicourt, a wealthy merchant of the king, this residence was originally a property surrounded by vineyards, with outbuildings and a garden. A local legend, though without historical basis, claims that Cardinal Richelieu held "secret conferences" there.

The house was largely destroyed during the war of 1870. Only the north wing and the caretaker's house remain of the original building.

In 1946, the city bought the estate to transform it into a school and a public park. Then, in 2009, the building was rehabilitated to become the House of Music and Dance (Maison de la Musique et de la Danse). It was during these works that you will discover an exceptional surprise: hidden under plaster, two "French-style" ceilings painted in the early 17th century were uncovered.

These paintings, of remarkable quality, rival those of the most beautiful Parisian mansions (*hôtels*) in the Marais district from the same period. This is why, since 2006, the facade, the roofs, and these ceilings have been listed in the Inventory of Historical Monuments.
